Would you like to donate items for OC sesquicentennial capsule?

Oil City is collecting items from residents and businesses to be put in the sesquicentennial time capsule.

Oil City Mayor Bill Moon said the time capsule is about half full. The deadline for donating items is Sept. 24.

Menus from restaurants, business cards, giveaway promotional items from businesses that are the size of a cell phone or smaller, or personal letters to children or grandchildren, are among the items Moon suggested people donate.

So far, the city has received copies of the “Our Town Oil City” DVDs; a ZIP drive of the sesquicentennial ceremony from April 11, as well as photos from the ceremony and Oil City 150 memorabilia; a copy of The Derrick from April 12; a plate from Assumption BMV Church; an Oil Heritage Festival shirt; and several personal letters, among other items, Moon said.

Before the items are buried in the time capsule, they will either be laminated or vacuum-sealed, Moon said. The time capsule will be buried, surrounded with gravel for drainage purposes, in Hasson Park at 10 a.m. Oct. 9 during O.C.toberfest.

The Zonta Club is donating a bronze plaque to be put on the ground to mark where the time capsule will be buried.

The Venango County Historical Society is having an informational panel about the sesquicentennial made that will be displayed in Hasson Park near where the time capsule will be buried, Moon said.

Items Oil City residents and businesses would like to donate for the time capsule may be dropped off at City Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Gates and Burns Realty, at 8 E. First St.
