Franklin School District students spent the last several weeks of the school year preparing a mural to hang in Franklin’s downtown, and high school art teacher Rachelle Surrena began applying the mural to the side of the Barrow-Civic Theatre this week.

Helping her Wednesday were her husband, Chad Surrena, and Grove City High School art teacher Chris Bauer.

The Surrenas applied primer on Tuesday, and they started to apply the panels Wednesday and will continue that task today.

The process of applying the panels started with putting on nova gel (which is acrylic paint without any color) and then putting the panels on top.

Then they smoothed out the bubbles underneath the panels with squeegees, which also helped wipe off extra nova gel. After that, they used sponges to clean up everything else.

“Rachelle and her students did a great job of working together and dividing a complicated project into many bite-sized pieces,” Bauer said. “All the students, no matter how big or how small their contribution was to the mural, should feel a sense of pride and accomplishment with the finished piece.”

An unveiling of the mural is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25.
