Verizon stores to host backpack giveaway

Wireless Zone, a Verizon retailer, is hosting its annual backpack giveaway from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at stores across the country.

The sites include the Verizon Wireless Zone in Cranberry in the Tractor Supply plaza.

The stores will be distributing backpacks full of school supplies to help local children prepare for the school year.

Backpacks will be given out on a first come, first serve basis, with one backpack per child.

Along with grabbing a backpack full of supplies, families can also enter their children into a sweepstakes where they could win a $10,000 college scholarship.

Children from kindergarten to 12th grade are eligible for entry and can be registered at their local stores during the event. Five scholarships in total will be awarded to randomly selected winners.

Lissa Channells, an indirect sales representative at the Verizon Wireless Zone in Cranberry, said their location will give away about 70 backpacks and will also have hot dogs and clowns at the event.

Cranberry store manager Jeff Henry added that the backpack giveaway may also get a visit from emergency response vehicles for the kids to see.

“We are definitely excited to help school kids start their school year right,” said Henry.

Other participating stores include Verizon Wireless Zone in Brookville, 231 Allegheny Blvd., Suite 2, and Verizon Wireless Zone in Butler, 170 Bon Aire Plaza.
