UPMC Northwest recently conducted a multidisciplinary simulation to train medical staff for amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a rare but often fatal childbirth complication. The two-day exercise involved 60 healthcare professionals using life-size mannequins to practice emergency response, including a post-mortem C-section. AFE, occurring in about 1 in 40,000 births, triggers a severe immune reaction that can cause cardiopulmonary arrest. The training aimed to enhance preparedness for this unpredictable condition, reinforcing aggressive and supportive treatment approaches. Hospital leaders emphasized the value of simulation in improving emergency response skills and ensuring better patient outcomes.
