The United Way of Venango County has announced a series of free workshops designed to inspire middle school students interested in volunteer work.
The program, called Connect 2 Contribute, is an introduction to volunteering for students in grades six to eight.
“In these tough economic times, organizations are in need of volunteers more than ever,” said Will Price, executive director of the United Way of Venango County. “All organizations are facing increasing demands for services, and volunteers can help them fill this growing need. We are pleased to be able to work with our young adults right here in Venango County,” Price added.
He added that the United Way also wants the students to reap the benefits of volunteering such as a boost in self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction, developing a sense of pride and identity, and a natural sense of accomplishment from doing good for others and the community.
The workshops will span a variety of topics and will also give students training in soft skills that will be helpful in both volunteer and professional environments.
- 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 4 — Landscaping and tool safety at Seneca Lawn and Garden
- 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 11 — Household maintenance and food preparation at Peddlers and Paddlers Inn
- 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25 (lunch provided) — Communication and basic first aid at Venango College of PennWest Clarion
- 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 15 — Pet care at Precious Paws.
Students in grades six to eight may go to unitedwayvc.org to sign up for as few or as many of the workshops as they would like.
The workshops will be offered at no cost to the student, but space is limited. Registrations are due by Friday.
United Way of Venango County also encourages people to visit unitedwayvc.org to find local volunteer opportunities, recruit volunteers by posting their organization’s projects, or get ideas for creating their own projects with friends, families and neighbors.
“Everyone has something to give, and summer is a great time to get involved,” said Price.
