Trooper helped woman whose car was on fire

A Franklin state police trooper helped a woman whose car was on fire while she was driving the vehicle earlier this week.

Trooper Shawn Owen said he was using radar at the Route 257 hill in Seneca at about 2 p.m. Monday when he saw a vehicle go up the hill with flames coming out from underneath the vehicle.

Owen said he activated the lights on his patrol car, and he said he didn’t think the woman realized her car was on fire when he pulled her over.

Owen said the woman pulled over at the top of the hill and got out of the vehicle. Owen said he got her back by his vehicle and away from the fire that was coming out the front of the vehicle and the wheel wells.

Then Owen, who had a fire extinguisher in his vehicle, put out the blaze.

A man from a nearby auto shop also helped as he ran over with an extinguisher, Owen said.

Owen said the fire was mostly contained in the engine and the car wasn’t engulfed in flames.

The fire was put out in the parking lot of McMahon Brothers Insurance near West Avenue.

Seneca volunteer firefighters also assisted at the scene.
