Recent warm weather has some spring flowers peeking out and has raised the hopes of some that spring is just around the corner.
Over the weekend the National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh posted that there were new record high temperatures for Feb. 18.
They were:
Pittsburgh, 68 – Previous 66 (2011)
Zanesville, Ohio, 69 – Previous 64 (2011/1994)
DuBois, 64 – Previous 57 (1981)
Wheeling, West Virginia, 68 – Previous 60 (2008)
New Philadelphia,Ohio, 69 – Previous 62 (1961)
The service said that a weak front would bring some rain today, but predicted that many locations could see 70 degrees by Friday.
However, a quick search of the internet turns up the blizzard of 1993 which hit on March 12-13.
According to a story by meteorologist Meghan Evans on www.accuweather.com, the storm “dumped more than 20 inches of snow across a wide corridor of the Appalachians and Northeast.” Included in some of the higher snow totals was in Pittsburgh with 25.3 inches.
Meanwhile, reports of robins abound, but none have crossed the path of this blogger.
More chipmunks are awakening much to the delight of a certain bloodhound and to the dismay of the one who tries to keep him under control. However, the camera was not quick enough to capture a picture of the fuzzy critters.
Last week’s dusting of snow led to the discovery of some “mystery” tracks. The mystery critter continued along the trail until veering off path just before where the game camera was set up. More deer continue to have candid shots taken.
Buford took a swim … with his sweater on.
Sherman mosied along and Sadie refuses to slow down.
A Walk in the Woods contains photos from newsroom staffer Anna Applegate’s daily jaunts around her neck of the woods. Tagging along on the treks are dogs, Buford and Sherman, and goats, Kyle and Kennedy. New puppy Sadie takes shorter walks until she gets big enough to join the crew. Applegate manages the Good Times and can be emailed at bigdogs.thederrick@gmail.com.
