Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced that four more counties, including Venango, have been added to the state’s spotted lanternfly quarantine zone due to the spread of this invasive pest. The quarantine prohibits moving lanternflies and infested materials and requires businesses operating in and out of affected areas to obtain permits. Spotted lanternfly eggs, which can survive harsh winters, are being targeted for destruction before they hatch in spring. The state has expanded its pest control efforts with increased funding, research support, and even trained detection dogs like Ruby and Lucky. Governor Shapiro’s proposed 2025-26 budget includes $3 million for emergency agricultural responses, along with millions more to support innovation and research aimed at protecting Pennsylvania’s $1.77 billion wine and grape industry and other vulnerable sectors.
