Dr. Howard Kirtland, who founded the Kirtland Cancer Foundation in Franklin, greeted the Rocky Grove softball team last week at his office.
The team raised $4,000 in a game against Maplewood in honor of former Rocky Grove athletic director Bill Mook, who died earlier this year from cancer. The team called the benefit the Bill Mook Memorial Strike Out Cancer Game Day.
Half the proceeds went to the Rocky Grove booster club and the other half was donated in Mook’s name to Kirtland Cancer Foundation.
Maplewood hosted a similar game the year before to benefit one of their community members battling cancer. The two squads intend to keep doing this fundraiser in the future.
