Revolutionizing the Energy Industry with Nickel-zinc

Over the last two weeks, we’ve reflected on Pennsylvania’s historical contribution to energy and how our Commonwealth can help lead the next energy revolution with new green energy technologies. We’ve covered the growth in the renewable energy job market, and last week, we looked at what these changes mean for local economies. Today, I want to introduce you to another partner who is working to change the energy landscape. Advanced Power and Energy is an innovative local company using nickel-zinc batteries to provide safe, reliable, and recyclable energy solutions.

Caleb Dawson of Advanced Power & Energy:

Nickel-zinc batteries are revolutionizing the energy industry as the demand for cleaner, safer energy solutions grows. These batteries are an important part of the transition toward sustainable energy, and the shift can begin now by integrating nickel-zinc batteries into energy infrastructure upgrades. George Bulick, President of Advanced Power & Energy, emphasized, “These batteries represent a pathway to greater energy independence for communities, enabling them to generate and store their own power, support microgrids, and ensure energy stability even during peak demand or grid failures. It is about empowering communities to take control of their energy future.”

Nickel-zinc batteries offer several advantages over more commonly used lithium batteries. One major benefit is safety. Lithium batteries can catch fire due to a phenomenon called “thermal runaway,” which is especially hazardous in large systems. Nickel-zinc batteries do not have this issue, making them a much safer and more reliable choice. Additionally, nickel-zinc batteries are fully recyclable, reducing environmental impact, unlike lithium batteries, which are more difficult to recycle and contain toxic materials. Another advantage is low maintenance. Nickel-zinc batteries do not require frequent checks or servicing, making them ideal for large energy storage systems. They also offer a lower cost of ownership, making them an attractive option for businesses and governments aiming for sustainable energy solutions. When used as part of a sustainable energy system, nickel-zinc batteries provide several key benefits. They are well-suited for energy storage, whether storing energy from the grid during off-peak hours or from renewable sources like solar and wind. These batteries help balance supply and demand by releasing stored energy when needed. Nickel-zinc batteries can also support the power grid during peak hours by discharging energy to reduce grid strain, playing a critical role in maintaining a stable energy supply. Additionally, nickel-zinc batteries are perfect for microgrids—small, self-sufficient energy systems that can operate independently of the main grid. These batteries provide reliable power in critical settings such as disaster zones, hospitals, and remote locations, without the risk of overheating.

Advanced Power & Energy, in partnership with ZincFive, is building a nickel-zinc battery plant in Greenville, Pennsylvania. This facility will strengthen the region’s role in the renewable energy sector and bring significant economic benefits to the local community. The plant will create well-paying jobs across various sectors, stimulating the local economy and driving growth. As more jobs are created, more dollars will be spent within the community, further boosting economic activity. The plant’s focus on sustainable development and eco-friendly practices is expected to attract government funding and business partnerships, reinforcing the region’s position as a leader in clean energy. As Bulick noted, “Reliable storage solutions are essential to bridge the gap between production and demand.” The batteries produced at the Greenville plant will not only support local energy needs but also provide power during outages or peak demand periods. At a microgrid level, these batteries can store energy and sell it back to utility companies during high-demand times, turning stored power into a valuable asset.
