Recycling for rescues

The DukeFest team is continuing its effort to raise money for area rescues through can collecting. Precious Paws Animal Rescue in Franklin has been dealing with animal dumping issues. There are adoptables big and small looking for homes.

We CAN do it!

Cans

The DukeFest team is gearing up for another month of can collecting.

“We are beginning a new ‘collection total’ with the month of June and have already had some major ‘drops’… totaling $ 37.20 and it is only the 13th,” a Facebook post said. “Thanks so much to everyone for stopping to drop off cans so that DukeFest can assist each of the rescue groups with their special needs.”

Last month, DukeFest collected $80 in recycling to give CART (County Animal Response Team) the kitten and cat food they need for the food bank they will participate in during August.

“We are assessing some special needs from the other groups and will determine the distribution soon,” the team posted.

DukeFest hoped “that everyone remembers the needs of the animals during your summer picnics and celebrations. Every can counts.”

DukeFest rocks

DukeFest is also presenting a big Candy Land game at the Children’s Penny Carnival on Friday, June 30, in Fountain (West) Park in Franklin.

On the afternoon of Thursday, June 15, DukeFest will hide over 30 rocks around town and a bit beyond including Two Mile Run Park, the airport, the bike trail and more.

“They will be pink and have a piece of candy painted on them. On each rock you will also see a number, Franklin, PA Rocks DukeFest and a paw print. When you find one – hang on to it and bring it to the Penny Carnival for a special prize of rock candy,” DukeFest posted on Facebook.

“Only one per child please. So if you find more than one, please re-hide it for someone else to find,” the post continued.

Pet show

The DukeFest team is also involved in the Franklin pet show, which will be held Tuesday, June 27, in Bandstand or South Park.

Registration and fun games will begin at 6 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

All dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations and licensed. All pets must be on a leash that is no longer than 4-feet long or in a secure cage.

DukeFest also has a window display at Northwest Savings Bank at the corner of Liberty and 13th streets in Franklin.

Dealing with dumping

Precious Paws Animal Rescue in Franklin has been dealing with animal dumping issues.

“Dumped animal after dumped animal, it never seems to stop,” Theresa Weldon posted earlier this week on the group’s Facebook page.

Simon

Simon

“This lovely male Siamese mix was dumped and found near starved. He’s incredibly friendly and affectionate. He genuinely loves people, which is a testament to how forgiving animals are,” she posted.

The rescue is naming the kitty Simon and fixing him up to get adopted.

Weldon said Simon still needed to gain weight, but was feline leukemia/FIV negative. He’s been neutered, dewormed and vaccinated.

“The important thing is he’s safe; so many dumped kitties aren’t. They will either become feral, or survive and breed, or die a terrible death, eaten by predators, starve, or hit by a car,” Weldon posted.

“Please adopt, not shop or take in free kittens from people who think it’s okay for cats to breed indiscriminately,” she added.

Little dog

Precious Paws also has a young chihuahua mix available for adoption.

Ella

Ella

“Little five-month-old Ella, a chihuahua mix, will be seeking her new home soon. Her owner did not have permission from the landlord to have her so she surrendered her to us,” Theresa Weldon posted in the rescue’s Facebook page.

“She’s piddle pad trained but was never taken outside so we will need to work on both leash training and getting the concept of going outside,” the post continued.

“She’s healthy, playful, and has been well loved. She’s a bit nervous in new situations so we will not be placing her in a home with young children or bigger dogs,” Weldon added.

Her $200 adoption fee includes spay, vaccinations, microchip, deworming, defleaing, and testing for Lyme and Heartworm.

Applications can be found online at www.pparfranklin.com.

Little Lance

Safehaven Small Breed Rescue is working to get Lance adopted.

Earlier this month, the rescue posted that Lance was home from the vet and still a little groggy but doing well.

“He had one baby tooth extracted, was neutered and microchipped,” the rescue posted.

The rescue was starting to review the applications submitted for him in an effort to “hopefully find him the perfect forever family.”

Safehaven Small Breed Rescue is located at 318 Barber Drive, Tionesta. It can be reached by phone at (814) 463-5004 or email at safehavensbr@gmail.com.

Big boy

Venango County Humane Society has a large order to fill as it tries to find Rhondo a home.

Rhondo

Rhondo

Rhondo, a Brazilian Mastiff mix, is a 7-year-old neutered male. He has a tan and brindle coat with a black mask and white markings on his feet and chest.

“He’s very intelligent and knows how to open doors. Brazilian Mastiffs are extremely dedicated to their owners and protective on the leash,” the shelter posted in a Petfinder listing.

“Rhondo will need a dominant owner who displays a natural authority and understands the mastiff’s alpha pack instinct. Rhondo is not good with children,” the post continued.

Meanwhile, the shelter posted some good news on it’s Facebook page.

“Carbaugh’s Barbershop in Franklin recently held a raffle for a Penguins Basket and raised $500 to help the animals at our shelter. We appreciate their generous donation and thank everyone who contributed to help us out,” the post said.

The humane society is open from noon to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. It is located at 286 S. Main St., Seneca. More information on the Venango County Humane Society is available by calling (814) 677-4040.

Skye’s closed to intakes

Skye’s Spirit Wildlife Rehabilitation Center posted an announcement on its Facebook page that the center is currently closed to new intakes until animals are ready to be released and donations come in.

“I’m very sorry but we can only do so much with the donations we receive. It breaks my heart,” the post continued.

The center continued to post photos of the animals in its care, including numerous fawns, baby rabbits, some baby American kestrels and more.

The rescue said the baby kestrels are voracious eaters and cost about $3 a day to feed and “they’ll be here for a few months.”

People may donate to the animals’ care at www.skyes-spirit.com or mail to SSWRC, 889 Farren Surrena Road. Harrisville, Pa. 16038
