The Cat in the Hat made a special visit to the Cranberry Mall on Saturday to show his support for the Relay for Life of Venango County during the Dr. Seuss-themed Paint Venango County Purple kickoff event.

The event was coordinated by lead chairperson Connie Shull. People and businesses had the opportunity to paint Venango County purple by purchasing purple ribbons they can hand out at their home or business.

Shull said a consistent crowd of people shuffled in through the mall doors during the day with a “much larger” turnout for the Home Depot building project that started the day off.

The emergency vehicle touch-a-truck featured Franklin state police, Community Ambulance Service, the Venango County Sheriff’s Department and fire departments from Seance and Oil City, Shull said.

In the afternoon, entertainment was split between a guest reader who reads in the voice of the narrator of the Dr. Seuss cartoons, and local musicians and musical groups such as Holey Jeans and Coston Cross.

“A lot of people were thrilled and some had never been there before but they saw the advertisement on Facebook and decided to come out,” Shull said.

Shull’s Relay for Life team, Chocoholics for a Cause, managed to raise $600 on Saturday, putting the them less than $2,000 shy of its $17,000 goal.

The fundraising has a deadline that coincides with the main Relay for Life event that will be held at 4 p.m. June 1 to 4 p.m. June 2 at Oil City High School.
