Pink Splash is back

Pink Splash for the Cure, an event that raises awareness and funding for breast cancer research and treatment, will return Tuesday to Franklin’s Bandstand Park.

The annual event begins at 5 p.m. with a performance by HOLeY Jeans.

Kathy Horner, executive director of the Franklin-based Kirtland Cancer Foundation, will give the opening introduction.

UPMC oncologist Dr. Shannon Penland will speak on Cancer Survivorship. Penland is a cancer survivor and past speaker at Pink Splash for The Cure.

After 6 p.m., all cancer survivors will be invited to make a splash with pink dye in the Egbert Fountain, according to Cheryl Carson, chairman of the Pink Splash committee.

The fountain’s water will remain pink until the City of Franklin weatherizes the fountain for the winter, Carson said.

Various items and raffle tickets will be available to purchase with all proceeds supporting the Kirtland Cancer Foundation. The foundation was founded by the late Dr. Howard Kirtland in 2005 to help families affected by a cancer diagnosis.

“I just hope it’s a great success, we sold a lot of shirts and sweatshirts so we might have to put another order in,” said Carson.

Raffle winners will be announced at about 6:40 p.m. and will be contacted by the event’s organizers.

The annual event was held in a virtual format last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pink Splash for the Cure began in 2007 with Egbert Fountain getting dyed pink.

Pink Splash Committee secretary Roz Greggs said Dine for the Cure will not be held this year as the committee did not want to ask local restaurants to donate following the past year-and-a-half of hardships for the food industry.

Greggs added that the committee is encouraging everyone to support local restaurants and shops as their continuous generosity make this event possible

“Other than that it’s just about the same as it has always been,” Carson said.
