PennWest offers new training program with grant funds

PennWest University’s Department of Nursing received a $1.18 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to train nurses as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE). The program will offer a certificate for registered nurses through 12 graduate credits earned after completing a 64-hour training. The aim is to increase the number of SANEs in underserved and rural areas of western Pennsylvania. The training includes both adult/adolescent and pediatric care, covering forensic interviewing, injury assessment, and evidence collection. Three groups of 15 nurses will be trained, starting in spring 2025. Participants will also receive stipends and additional support.
