ORA contest winner launches Franklin food tours business

From staff reports

A Bite of History Food Tours, which was launched in March by owner Valerie Perry, combines history, eating and exploring in Franklin.

“Participants eat their way through a history-altering town of business tycoons, presidential candidates and an assassin,” Perry said.

Perry received $5,000 for her endeavor late last year when she was named one of three winners of the Oil Region Alliance’s Get On The Trail business plan contest.

She said the tours last three hours and operate seasonally on Fridays and Saturdays. Each tour includes food and beverage tastings at five to eight establishments and stops at seven historical points of interest across Franklin.

The tours are “a unique experience for locals and visitors in Western Pennsylvania’s Oil Region,” Perry said.

TripAdvisor says food tours were recently among the fastest growing travel experiences both domestically and internationally.

Perry is a travel expert and cruise director and was formerly a host and producer for National Geographic.

She has combined her local knowledge with her travel experience to create A Bite of History Food Tours in her hometown to help locals and visitors discover the flavors and stories the area has to offer.

The Alliance’s Get on the Trail contest rewards new and expanding businesses that submit business plans to provide vital goods and services to users of the bicycle, mountain bike, hiking, water, ski, ATV and equestrian trails in the area.
