Businesses, organizations, groups and individuals are invited to sign up for Oil City’s annual Community Clean-Up Day scheduled Wednesday, April 19.
“Clean streets and sidewalks are fundamental to a vibrant, welcoming community,” Oil City Main Street Program manager Kathy Bailey said.
“Participating in Community Clean-Up Day is a great way to get outside in the fresh air with friends or colleagues, roll up their sleeves and show pride in community,” Bailey added. “Keeping our downtown and surrounding areas beautiful is an ideal opportunity for people who are passionate about Oil City to lend their support.”
Although focus is on downtown areas, participants may choose to clean another area of Oil City. Participating groups may also adopt their designated area and keep it clean throughout the 2023 season.
At the end of the day, the Oil City Fire Department will wash down the downtown streets; the next morning, the public works department will collect the bags of refuse gathered by event participants in the designated cleanup locations.
Erin Wanninger, chair of the program’s Safe, Clean & Green Committee, noted 139 volunteers from 25 organizations participated in last year’s event, collecting 139 bags of refuse across their designated areas.
The three shifts are 9 a.m. to noon, noon to 4 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Groups interested in participating are asked to register by April 5.
Check-in will be at Town Square, where Main Street volunteers will have a supply of trash bags, gloves and safety vests as well as bottled water and light snacks. Participants are asked to bring their own brooms, rakes, or other hand tools as desired.
Participants are advised to follow safety precautions and place all bagged debris from their registered cleanup area in a designated location, and report back to the event check-in at the end of their shift.
Adult supervision is required for all participants under 18.
Registration forms are available at www.oilcity.org/all-events/community-cleanup-day as well as the main lobby of City Hall, Oil City Library, or by request at (814) 677-3152 or oilcity.mainstreet@oilregion.org.
