The Oil City Fire Department is urging all residents and visitors to stay off the ice on the Allegheny River due to hazardous conditions caused by significant jagged ice buildup.
Oil City Fire Chief Tim Alex said that the ice is extremely unstable, with broken and shifting sections that pose a serious risk of injury or entrapment.
Attempting to cross or venture onto the river can result in people becoming trapped by shifting ice or falling into dangerously cold waters, leading to life-threatening situations, the department said.
The Oil City Fire Department is actively monitoring the river conditions and will provide updates as necessary.
Anyone who witnesses an emergency situation related to the ice should call 911 immediately.
