An Oil City School District principal will be retiring at the end of the school year.
School board members on Monday accepted the retirement of Tammie Newman, who is the principal at Seventh Street and Smedley Street elementary schools.
Newman joined the district in June 2009 when she was hired as co-principal at Hasson Heights Elementary.
She remained at Hasson through the end of the 2012-13 school year. She has been the Seventh Street and Smedley Street principal and Title I coordinator since September 2013.
Newman’s retirement will take effect June 30.
In some other business at Monday’s school board meeting, business manager Susan Fisher gave an update on district budget plans for 2020-21.
“Everything we were told when the budget process began is out the window now,” Fisher said.
She added that she had heard the state could increase or decrease funding.
“I’m not expecting the district will get as much in delinquent taxes this year,” Fisher said.
Fisher doesn’t anticipate the district increasing property taxes this year. She said there has been talk on the state level of freezing property taxes so the district may not be able to raise taxes even if they wanted to.
Another source of income to the district will be about $784,000 from the CARES Act coronavirus relief fund.
She added that another unknown with the CARES Act money is when the district will receive the funds.
In other news, the board approved a contract with Slippery Rock Roofing to replace the roof at Seventh Street Elementary.
The cost to replace the roof is $221,265. The materials, purchased from Garland Company Inc. at state contract pricing, cost $116,413.12.
In addition, the board approved declaring the district’s current construction projects as critical.
The projects in question are replacing the roof at Seventh Street, renovations on the high school pool and renovations to Hasson Heights Elementary under PlanCon.
