An Oil City man has been charged with strangulation following an altercation Wednesday on the North Side.

A criminal complaint filed through District Judge Matthew Kirtland’s office said officers with the Oil City Police Department were sent to a home in the 200 block of Bissell Avenue for a possible assault.

A woman told police that she and 35-year-old Lucas Donze were in a verbal dispute because she had asked him to leave the residence since he was under the influence of a controlled substance, the complaint said.

Donze went outside the home, but then forced his way back in. He grabbed the woman by the throat and pushed her up against the refrigerator, the complaint said.

A witness who lives directly behind the home said she tried to help the woman by physically engaging Donze, the complaint said.

The witness said she grabbed Donze and “body checked” him to an area outside, but he also struck her on the left arm, the complaint said.

Donze has been charged with a felony count of strangulation, a misdemeanor count of simple assault and two counts of harassment.

He was arraigned Wednesday before Kirtland and placed in the Venango County jail after failing to post $20,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled Wednesday in Central Court.
