OC man accused of stealing $15,725 from Country Fair store

From staff reports

An Oil City man is facing charges that accuse him of stealing more than $15,700 in cash and goods from his employer between May and July.

Oil City police said in a criminal complaint that Jacob Howard, 21, and a male juvenile, who both were employed at the North Side Country Fair in Oil City, worked together to steal about $15,724 in cash and goods from the store.

While working his shift, Howard would “on multiple occasions” void transactions after a person had paid for the merchandise, then would take the extra unaccounted for cash and hide it on his person when he took the rest of the money from the cash register to a safe, the complaint said.

On other occasions, when Howard and the juvenile were working, one of them would obtain merchandise and pretend to pay for it while the other would ring it up at the cash register and then void the transaction, the juvenile told police, the complaint said.

Police also observed the thefts on surveillance footage provided by the store, the complaint said.

Howard has been charged with felony counts of criminal conspiracy engaging-theft by unlawful taking of movable property, theft by unlawful taking of movable property, and theft by deception-false impression.

He was arraigned Monday, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 8 in Venango County Central Court.
