The Oil City High School boys’ basketball team came off a huge win against Seneca on Tuesday night, putting them in the District 10 semi finals.
This game wasn’t going to be an easy one for the Oilers. Seneca’s Logan Kibbe, coming into the game with one hundred threes, was going to be a huge threat for the Oilers. Kibbe starting off the game with a quick three was no surprise, but the Oilers didn’t let that control the momentum. The Oilers battled back and ended the quarter with a one point lead.
Kibbe, leading the charge, kept Seneca in the game, but Oilers point guard Jacob Hornbeck was getting the job done. Scoring ten points going to the half helped the boys in blue keep a one point lead going into the break.
Coming out of the break, Seneca jumped to a quick four point lead. The Oilers, who have battled through adversity before, did not let this phase them. Midway through the third, the Oilers went on a 11-2 run.
Going into the fourth, the boys in blue managed to once again maintain a one point lead. Coming down to the wire, Cameron VanWormer was able to hit a floater, giving the Oilers a two point lead. Seneca matched up with a floater of their own to tie the game with roughly a minute left to go. Hornbeck, having a huge game, was able to give the Oilers a lead once again with his well finished lay up.
The game ended with the Oilers winning, 38-36. The victory sends the Oil City Oilers back to the D10 championship for the second year in a row where they will face the Franklin Knights.
