Nifty at 90: OC man’s life filled with various careers, interests

John “Jack” Eckert of Oil City celebrates his 90th birthday, known for his athletic accomplishments and dedication to family and community. A standout basketball player from St. Joseph’s school, Jack scored over 1,000 points in his career—a legacy carried on by his son and grandson. His 65-year marriage to Carole, sparked at a Sadie Hawkins dance, brought them five children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Jack’s career ranged from running the family business, Eckert Plumbing, to working as a realtor and “landman,” where he developed a love for local wildlife. An avid sports fan and gardener, he also enjoys coin collecting, antiquing, and butterfly watching. Following Carole’s passing in 2021, Jack’s life has been brightened by his cat, Rip, and the friendships he nurtures over meals at McNerney’s. His daughters, Sally, Susan, and Sharon, send him all their love on this milestone birthday.
