Nifty at 90: Army veteran has funny story on how he and his wife met

Donald Clair Reed, a lifelong Sandycreek resident, Army veteran, and devoted family man, celebrates his 90th birthday with a lifetime of dedication to his community, career, and loved ones. A proud member of East Grove United Methodist Church for 75 years, Don served in the U.S. Army, National Guard, and Reserves for two decades, reaching the rank of Sgt. 1st Class. Married to his wife, Dona, for 65 years, he cherishes his three children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

In the words of Don: “I was driving home from work one day when I came upon a woman crying on the side of the road. I rolled my window down to ask the poor lady what was wrong, and she told me she didn’t have anyone to love her. I said ‘Don’t cry! I’ll marry you!’” Sixty-five years later, Don and Dona are still happily married, and their grandchildren still aren’t sure how their grandparents actually met!

A former gas station owner and machine operator at Joy Manufacturing, Don now enjoys puzzles, word searches, storytelling, and staying active on his stationary bike.
