Nifty at 90: Air Force retiree had earlier caught interest of MLB teams

Edward T. Winger, a Venango County native now living in Texas, celebrates his 90th birthday today, marking him as the oldest living member of the Winger family. Born during the Great Depression in a Wolf’s Head Oil Refinery company house in Reno, Pennsylvania, Ed grew up hunting, fishing, and gardening with his family, developing a deep appreciation for his roots in the Oil City area. A talented baseball player, he was scouted by major league teams before marrying Carolyn McCoy and serving 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a senior master sergeant with a Meritorious Service Award. He later worked for United Blood Services, ran The Party Barn with his son, and managed the Winger Ranch. Despite living in Texas with his children, Ed cherishes his Pennsylvania upbringing and attributes his longevity to staying active, pursuing dreams, and faith in God.
