Man facing charges for assaulting trooper at residence

From staff reports

An Irwin Township man is facing aggravated assault and resisting arrest charges following an incident Thursday.

Franklin state police said in a criminal complaint they went to check on the welfare of James Ohler, 24, at a Duncan Road residence in Irwin Township at about 12:50 a.m. Thursday.

Troopers found Ohler in a bedroom, into which he had locked himself and refused to come out, and he told police “You need to leave” and “I hate cops,” the complaint said.

Police obtained information that knives and a crossbow were inside the bedroom, and they requested backup from Butler state police, who also responded, the complaint said.

When police tried to forcibly enter the room, Ohler began “violently pushing” and striking the door, striking a trooper on the head and causing a laceration in the process, and later biting the same trooper on the hand when police gained entry into the room, according to the complaint.

After struggling with police and failing to comply with verbal commands, Ohler was eventually detained and transported to UPMC Northwest for evaluation, the complaint said.

Ohler was arraigned later Thursday on a felony count of aggravated assault and two misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, and he is being held in the Venango County jail after being unable to post bail.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled Jan. 10 in Central Court.
