Local workers still helping with Irma clean-up

Two area residents are still working hard to beat the heat in Florida while restoring glass in vehicles damaged by Hurricane Irma.

Curt Tarr, of Franklin, an employee of Safelite AutoGlass in Franklin, is working as part of a mobile team in the areas affected by the hurricane.

“It’s a change of pace from back home in Franklin,” he said. “It’s hot and very humid. I’ve been drinking water like it’s going out of style.”

Tarr was working Tuesday afternoon in Pembroke Park in Broward County, where he said much of the cleanup has been done but many people are dealing with debris and damage to structures and vehicles.

“A lot of people have had their windshields and backglass shattered,” Tarr said. “They’re overwhelmed down here. Usually, in this area, our company gets 400 jobs a day, and just yesterday they had 800 jobs.”

Ben Rutherford, of Seneca, is working alongside Tarr in the relief efforts.

“It wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be,” he said. “They had a lot of it cleaned up when we got down here. It’s not their first rodeo.”

The team, which includes eight people from the greater Pittsburgh area, is scheduled to return home Oct. 1. Until then, they’ll be hustling to stay a step ahead of the heat.

“We try to get up and going early in the morning before it gets too hot,” Rutherford said. “But this morning at 7 a.m., it was 90 degrees.”
