Both the Venango County Humane Society and Tri-County Animal Rescue posted a “Hawk Warning” on their Facebook pages.
“Do not leave your pets outside without supervision,” the warning reads.
Precious Paws of Franklin has received three recent reports of hawks taking companion animals, president Theresa Weldon said.
“Watch your smaller animals. Watch your outdoor cats,” Weldon said.
Hawks and other large birds of prey such as eagles do not distinguish between family pets and wildlife, she said.
“They’re opportunistic birds,” Weldon said.
Animals under 15 pounds are particularly at risk, she said.
