Laymen’s Service, Cross Walk set for Good Friday in Oil City

From staff reports

A Laymen’s Service and subsequent Cross Walk will once again take place on Good Friday (March 29) in Oil City.

The 57th annual Laymen’s Service will be held at 7 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church. Steve Luxbacher will direct the men’s choir and Joe Emanuele will accompany. Bumper Woods will serve as worship leader.

Nick Billingsley, who is the full-time technologies director for the church, will deliver a message titled “Made New at the Cross.”

Billingsley, a Rocky Grove resident, coaches basketball from first through seventh grades, with his main responsibility being as seventh-grade boys coach in the Franklin Area School District.

In addition, Billingsley is involved with several mentorship opportunities at Central Elementary School, where he builds relationships with boys throughout the school.

The Cross Walk — which offers participants opportunities for reflection, witness and fellowship — will begin at 10:30 a.m. in King’s Memorial Park, at the corner of Main and Center streets.

The walk, anticipated to take about one hour, will proceed across the Petroleum Street Bridge, through the South Side, over the State Street Bridge, along Seneca Street, back up Elm Street, over the Center Street Bridge and back to the park.

Choir rehearsal for the Laymen’s Service will be held at 8:30 p.m. March 28 at the church. Anyone interested in singing with the choir should use the Google form at goodfridaylaymen.org

A breakfast, prepared by Dotty Haggerty, will be held ahead of the Laymen’s Service at 6 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus, and will be presided over by Lou Slautterback.

Breakfast tickets are $10 and are available at the Knights of Columbus door, Friedhaber’s Appliance and Pathways, all in Oil City; Somers Family Dentistry, in Seneca; and through Scott Walters and Slautterback, in Franklin.
