From staff reports
The Fryburg Marksman’s Junior Rifle Team is accepting applications for new junior shooters.
The team is a locally run non-profit organization that provides area youth with the opportunity to learn gun safety skills and compete in small-bore and air rifle competition, according to NRA certified coaches Ashley Ahrens, Julie Graf and Scott Fowkes. They provide coaching instruction that is designed to match each athlete’s individual level of knowledge and experience.
Ahrens, a four-time state champion and nationally ranked shooter, started the program in October 2014. Since then, Graf and Fowkes have joined her to expand the program.
“I created this program to do much more than to just teach kids how to shoot. We strive to teach our athletes skills like goal setting, discipline, perseverance and team building. We want these kids to become community leaders and role models,” Ahrens said.
“Our program currently includes shooters as young as 8 years old who are learning gun safety and basic shooting techniques, to older shooters who are pursuing high level competitions that could send them across the country and even land them a college scholarship,” Fowkes said.
Graf said, “We’re looking for new shooters who are willing to make a commitment to this sport, and this team. We have high expectations for our shooters which requires serious practice and a positive attitude. We want to take our shooters big places, and have fun doing it!”
An informational meeting to accept new applicants is set at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, in the basement of the Fryburg Sportsman’s Club.
No experience is necessary and attendance to the meeting is free and does not imply immediate commitment.
Interested parties should contact Coach Ahrens to reserve a seat.
