Indiana man charged in 2023 discharge of firearm that struck child

Two Indiana men face charges after a firearm accidentally discharged in Pennsylvania, critically injuring a seven-year-old girl. Nicholas Mason Helms, 23, was handling a 9 mm handgun when it fired, striking the child in the head. The gun belonged to Damien Gross, 23, who lacked a license to carry it. The men, visiting Pennsylvania with friends, had just arrived at their rental when the incident occurred. Helms faces charges of simple assault and reckless endangerment, while Gross is charged with carrying a firearm without a license. The child suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital. Preliminary hearings are set for April 30.
