Free water testing available for wells, springs, cisterns

From staff reports

Penn State Extension has received funding through the state Department of Health to offer a limited number of free water tests for Venango County residents who use wells, springs or cisterns for their drinking water supply.

The program is offered through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control’s Environmental Health Capacity building initiative and with support form the Penn State Master Well Owner Network.

Registration will be limited to about 33 households.

Each water supply will receive testing through a Department of Environmental Protection-accredited water testing laboratory for coliform bacteria, E.coli bacteria, nitrate, manganese, arsenic, lead and copper.

Each household must own or rent a primary residence (no camps) in Venango County that uses a private well, spring or cistern for a drinking water supply.

Registrants will be required to attend a one-hour initial educational webinar at noon Monday, May 17, to learn about the testing program.

After attending the webinar, homeowners will be able to pick up a water testing kit at the Venango County Extension office. Further instructions will be provided during the initial webinar.

Optional follow-up webinars will be offered to provide interpretation of results and to answer questions.

Registration and further information for this testing program is available at www.extension.psu.edu or by calling (877) 345-0691.
