FHS student wins local patriotic art contest

Franklin High School junior Calan Hollis created a two-dimensional artwork for the VFW’s Creative Patriotic Art Contest, and his entry was selected as the local VFW’s winner and will move on to the state competition. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $37,000. A brief awards ceremony was held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Franklin VFW where his artwork was on display. Hollis read his artist statement about the piece and was presented with his award from the Franklin VFW Auxiliary. More than 4,000 high school students nationwide participate in the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest each year. The contest began in 1979 to recognize up-and-coming artists and encourage patriotism in youth.
