NEW YORK (AP) — The lights atop the Empire State Building in New York have been dimmed for Earth Hour, a global movement aimed at highlighting the effects of climate change.
The lights on the top of the landmark New York City building were dimmed Saturday for the hourlong event, held at 8:30-9:30 p.m. local time. Some billboards in Times Square also went dark.
Saturday’s event marked the 10th annual Earth Hour, which is sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund. The organization says the movement provides a moment of solidarity worldwide for climate action.
Its website says people in 178 countries and territories are expected to participate.
