Drug, firearm charges filed after traffic stop in Sugarcreek Borough

From staff reports

Sugarcreek Borough police said a routine stop for traffic violations in the 400 block of Rocky Grove Avenue late Saturday night led to the discovery of an illegal firearm and drug paraphernalia, among other things.

Police said a search warrant on the vehicle revealed almost 900 vials of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, for use in a vape pen; $2,000 in cash; an illegal firearm; a half-pound of marijuana; and several items of paraphernalia.

Police said after the vehicle was stopped at about 11:50 p.m., they found the driver, Caleb Stahlman, 19, of Oil City, was driving under the influence.

Police said the odor of marijuana was coming from inside the vehicle.

The passenger, Logan Fink, 18, of Franklin, was asked to step out of the vehicle and police found him to be in possession of a firearm, police said.

“He exited the vehicle and the butt of the gun was exposed to the officer,” Sugarcreek police Chief Bob Wenner told the newspaper on Thursday. “It was also found to have the serial number zipped off.”

Police said Fink was then taken into custody for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

The search warrant on the vehicle was executed Tuesday.

Fink is charged with possession of firearms with manufacturer’s number altered and firearms not to be carried without license, both felony charges.

Stahlman is charged with felony counts of criminal conspiracy and manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance. He is also charged with DUI, use or possession of a controlled substance (both misdemeanors) and summary counts of failure to keep right and no rear lights.

“I’m proud of my guys,” Wenner said. “They did some good work.”

Both Fink and Stahlman are scheduled for preliminary hearings at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
