DEP awards funds to improve power grid in rural areas

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) awarded over $15 million in grants to enhance electric grid reliability and resilience for rural areas through the 2024 Pennsylvania Grid Resilience Grants (PA GRG) funding. Northwestern Rural Electric Cooperative in Venango, Crawford, Warren, and Erie Counties will receive $834,400 for a new transmission line with smart grid technology, reducing outage times by 84 percent. United Electric Cooperative in Jefferson, Clearfield, and Elk Counties will receive $5,049,000 to upgrade an outdated substation, increase efficiency and capacity, and implement smart grid technology. These improvements, funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), will benefit over 57,000 residents in 18 rural counties. Another grant round will open in Fall 2024.
