Cranberry Township supervisors on Thursday approved a $1,000 contribution toward the township’s July 2 holiday fireworks extravaganza.
The $1,000 amount is up from the usual $500 offerings that have been made in the past, but down from last year’s $2,000 donation.
Township manager Chad Findlay said the township and local businesses chipped in more money last year to “put on a bigger show” after many events had been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In other business at Thursday’s meeting, supervisors agreed to hire two “summer help” workers from Career Concepts Staffing Services at $11 an hour for general labor and grass cutting.
Findlay said these positions are urgently needed, and he added that the staffing agency was recommended to make sure the positions were reliably filled for the season.
Road supervisor Ted Williams said crews have continued ditching and cleaning roads along with making various repairs and replacements. Williams said crews also removed snow plows and spreaders off the township’s vehicles this month.
“Last weekend I got a little worried about that,” Williams said in reference to some snow that fell Sunday.
Findlay said he has been looking into bolstering the township’s returns on funds in money market accounts after interest rates plunged over the last year.
He also noted the township will collect scrap metal from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the township building.
Supervisors Buckholtz, Matt McSparren, and chairman Harold Best attended Thursday’s meeting with Best arriving about halfway through the session.
