Cranberry schools outline plans for prom, graduation

Senior students at Cranberry Area High School will have a bit of “normalcy” before they graduate.

High School principal Richard Smith announced there will be a senior prom and a traditional graduation ceremony.

The prom will be held May 7 and will be restricted to seniors and their guests only. The junior class will not be attending.

The graduation ceremonies will be held June 8 inside, and attendance will be restricted to the graduate and two guests.

“We are mindful of safety and will modify if the conditions allow,” Smith said.

The students, he said, may return the following day for photographs on the stage.

“That is about as normal as you can get.” School Board President Tom Neeley said.

Elementary school Principal Robert Horner outlined the district’s health and safety plan for spring sports.

He said participants in track and field events must wear face masks only when they congregate. When the masks are not being worn, participants must observe social distancing and stand 6 feet apart.

Participants in track events must wear masks until the starter calls them to the ready position. At that time, masks may be lowered. In some races, every other lane will be used.

Horner said the dugout will be used for baseball games, but use will be restricted to the coaching staff and three to four players. Masks must be worn in the dugout.

Additional players will sit in the bleachers. Spectators will be able to use the hillside in the outfield, and social distancing is encouraged.

All social distancing requirements will be in force for any indoor event such as volleyball.

Schools visiting Cranberry will be notified of the safety plan.
