Cranberry approves Rotary request for dog stations

Dog walkers, rejoice – Fido is getting a doggy station at both the West End Marina and Justus Trail.

Thursday night, Cranberry Township supervisors approved a request from the Franklin Rotary Club to install a dog station with waste bags on the bike trail near the Saltbox house.

The township, which owns and maintains the portion of the trail that spans through Cranberry, would be responsible for disposing of the waste, said Chad Findlay, township manager.

“We have several fur-baby lovers in the club,” said Diane McCall, Rotary new member chair.

The Rotary recently received approval from the city to install a similar doggy station at the West End Marina, McCall said.

“Our folks will put them up and stock them with bags,” she said.

Two years ago, the Franklin Rotary Club received approval to install dog stations at Fountain, Bandstand and Riverfront parks in Franklin, McCall went on to say.

The stations are lockable and tamper-proof, and community members do a good job of alerting the Rotary via Facebook when the bags are empty, she said.

Money was raised through fundraisers for the dog stations, McCall said.

Most dog owners are well-intentioned and leave for walks, bag in hand, McCall said. The dog stations with bags will be a help to owners if Fido goes more than once, she said.

“We were happy to do it,” McCall said.
