County proclamation supports Zonta efforts

From staff reports

In recognition of the Zonta Club of Oil City-Franklin’s efforts to end gender-based violence, the Venango County commissioners issued a proclamation that declares Friday, Dec. 8 as “Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women Day” in Venango County.

The 16 Days of Activism runs through Sunday.

Residents are being encouraged to prevent gender-based violence by educating the community on its harm, to advocate for survivors of gender-based violence, and to act in service on their behalf, according to a news release from the Zonta Club of Oil City-Franklin.

The club was founded in 1951 as part of Zonta International, a leading global organization made up of more than 27,000 professionals in over 1,100 Zonta clubs in 62 countries. Zonta, which was founded nearly 100 years ago, advocates for general equality, by empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Since 2012, the “Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women” campaign has raised awareness of violations of women’s rights and has united Zonta clubs worldwide in conducting impactful advocacy actions to fight violence against women and gender inequality.

The Oil City-Franklin Zonta Club has 33 members and invites new members to join. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month except July at the Belles Lettres Club in Oil City and begin with social time, followed by dinner at 6 p.m.
