County election officials begin to finalize count

From staff reports

Venango County Election Board members met Friday to begin canvassing all the votes from Tuesday’s primary election.

Sabrina Backer, the county’s elections director, said the final count will probably be completed around June 1 as the panel will spend the next week or so double checking the numbers.

Backer did say results of the write-in battle for Franklin mayor waged by current mayor Doug Baker and city councilman Ryan Rudegeair won’t change.

Baker had a 160-147 edge on the GOP ticket in the primary, and Backer said there were no provisional ballots that would change the total.

Neither candidate received the necessary 101 write-in votes on Democratic ballots, so Baker will be the only candidate listed on the general election ballot in November.

Another interesting race Tuesday was for Oil City School Board, where eight candidates were vying for five positions. Backer said there were only three provisional ballots for that race, so those results won’t change.

Since school board candidates can cross file, seven of the eight candidates received enough votes on one ticket, or both tickets, to move on to the November race.

Backer said the tallying and checking of write-in votes will be one of the things done over the next week to determine which write-ins received enough votes to be listed on November ballots.
