Coroner identifies man who died in brush fire

Venango County Coroner Christina Rugh has identified the man who died in a brush fire Tuesday near Two Mile Run County Park.

Edwin Geer, 72, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, was found dead at the scene of the 3 p.m. blaze in Oakland Township near Lockwood Lane, Rugh said.

Franklin state police said Geer started four small brush fires in a field behind his family farm. Police said the blaze grew out of his control and started to spread into the nearby field and woods.

Geer sustained fatal injuries from the fire and smoke that was present, police said.

Rugh said the cause of death is pending.

A dozen volunteer fire departments responded to the fire, which burned about 8-to-10 acres. Firefighters were able to contain the chaotic blaze in about three and a half hours, said Walt Burgard, the second assistant chief with Rocky Grove Volunteer Fire Department.

No firefighters were injured and no buildings were damaged, Burgard said.

Rugh said Geer was in the area because he was visiting with family for Easter at the property he owned.
