A pre-school speech therapist at the Riverview Intermediate Unit and her family displayed a core communication board that has 48 symbols in Franklin’s Riverfront Park on Monday afternoon.

Beth Wachob said communication boards are designed to help non-verbal people or people who have limited communication skills to express their wants and needs.

“(The board) has playground specific words on it. So, words like swing, drink, play, run, help,” Wachob said.

Wachob said she noticed on a therapy Facebook page that people were putting these boards up in their communities’ playgrounds, which is how the idea came about.

She worked with the Franklin Fine Arts Council to apply for a grant through Bridge Builders Community Foundations, and she received the grant from the Venango County Unrestricted Endowment administered by Bridge Builders.

The board can be used by anyone of any age who is nonverbal or who has limited communication skills.
