Community group planning ‘Pinwheels Against Abuse’ display

From staff reports

A local organization called In Support Of (ISO) is hosting several events in Venango County in conjunction with April being Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Kiyomi Knox, a counselor and advocate with the PPC Violence Free Network of Family Service and Children’s Aid Society, is coordinating the child abuse awareness activities for the In Support Of group.

Knox describes ISO as a committee of Venango County groups that are coming together to raise awareness of and support for various issues.

A major focus of the Child Abuse Awareness Month activities will be a display of pinwheels outside the Venango County Courthouse throughout April.

Each of the 331 pinwheels that will be set up at the courthouse represents one of the calls made last year in Venango County to Child Protective Services workers.

The pinwheels will be assembled next week at the Franklin and Oil City libraries, and Knox says volunteers are welcome to help between 5 and 8 p.m. Monday at the Franklin library and 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Oil City library.

“These are family-friendly events and are open to anyone in our community,” Knox said. “Anyone can come out and help us raise awareness and support those affected by child abuse.”
