Cigarette cleanup program along turnpikes is successful

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and the PA Turnpike Commission implemented the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) at 17 service plazas, achieving a 43% litter reduction in eight months. The program recycles cigarette butts into plastic products and composts residual materials. Cigarette butts, which comprise 37% of roadway litter, pose severe environmental risks by contaminating soil and water, harming wildlife, and persisting indefinitely due to their non-biodegradable filters.
