Signs showcasing the new name for the Petroleum Street Bridge in Oil City are in place on both sides of the structure.
A ceremony will be held Saturday to officially rename the bridge after Spc. Jonathan R. Kephart, formerly of Siverly, who was killed in Iraq on April 8, 2004, when his convoy patrol was ambushed near Baghdad.
Kephart, 21, was a 2000 graduate of Faith Baptist Academy in Seneca and enlisted in January 2002. He had been in Iraq for 10 days prior to his death.
Mayor Bill Moon Jr. will read a proclamation during Saturday’s ceremony, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in the grass area near National Fuel.
Oil City VFW commander Jason Reed brought the idea of renaming Relief Street after Kephart to city council in January, but city manager Mark Schroyer suggested renaming a bridge instead because it is a common way of honoring fallen soldiers in Pennsylvania.
