About 100 children participated in Central Elementary School’s Walk and Bike to School Day on Wednesday.

The children, who were accompanied by about 150 teachers and parents in the morning, made their way to school from various points for the event, which is held each year in memory of Jim Holden, a Franklin biking and outdoors enthusiast who was instrumental in beginning it in 2004.

Holden’s goal was to promote bicycling, a healthy community and help keep youths active and safe.

C.P. Mooney, Central Elementary physical education teacher and event organizer, said the first pickup point was at Third and Liberty streets, followed by Railroad and 13th streets and then the Save A Lot parking lot on Grant Street.

“We really needed to get back to (Walk and Bike) because we haven’t done it since pre-COVID,” Mooney said. “They were excited to go back at 2:30 and do it in reverse.”

Mooney thanked Franklin Events and Marketing coordinator Ronnie Beith, Franklin city police and the city of Franklin, “because we couldn’t do it without them.”
