LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Captain America: Civil War” remains the box office winner in its second weekend in theaters, but the star-driven adult drama “Money Monster” showed some unexpected might too, earning $15 million according to studio estimates Sunday.
“Civil War” took in $72.5 million from 4,226 screens, bringing its domestic total to $295.9 million. In just two weekends in theaters, it’s already passed the total domestic grosses of “Captain America: Winter Soldier” film by over $35 million.
“The Jungle Book” placed second with $17.8 million.
Meanwhile, the R-rated George Clooney and Julia Roberts financial thriller “Money Monster” got off to a healthy third place start, beating expectations in its first weekend in theaters after premiering this week at the Cannes Film Festival. The film cost only $27 million to produce.
