Boy dies, 4 juveniles injured in Crawford County crash

A 9-year-old boy died and four juveniles were sent to the hospital after a horse-drawn wagon hit a truck about 1:35 p.m. Tuesday.

The crash occurred in Crawford County at the intersection of Fish Flats Road, Fink Road and Whitney Road.

The five children – ages 9, 8, 7, 4 and 3 – were in a horse-drawn wagon on Fink Road when the horse took off across the roadway and into the path of a 1995 Ford Rollback truck driven by Alan J. Chess, 19, of Saegertown, according to Corry state police. The collision knocked the five children from the wagon, police said.

The driver of the wagon was pronounced deceased at the scene by Crawford County Coroner Scott Schell. Two of the children were flown to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for treatment for severe injuries. The other two passengers of the wagon were taken to UPMC Hamot in Erie.

The operator of the truck was wearing his seatbelt and was uninjured in the crash.

Spartansburg Ambulance, Spartansburg Volunteer Fire Department, Emergycare, Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, Lifestar and Stat MedEvac assisted at the scene.
