Woman accused of DUI crash with child, 4, in vehicle

From staff reports

A Franklin woman is facing charges after she was allegedly in a DUI crash with her 4-year-old son inside the vehicle last month in Cranberry.

The woman, identified as Emily Nelson, 26, had been found by police passed out in a vehicle just a few hours before the crash, police said.

A criminal complaint filed through district judge Patrick Lowrey’s office said that around 4 p.m. April 19, Franklin state police found Nelson unresponsive inside her vehicle in the Cranberry Walmart parking lot.

Nelson was taken to UPMC Northwest for medical treatment and was found to be in possession of marijuana, pills and drug paraphernalia, the complaint said.

Then, at around 8:15 p.m. the same day, Nelson was involved in an accident on Route 322 in Cranberry, with her 4-year-old son in the vehicle, the complaint said.

Nelson was suspected of driving under the influence and was taken to UPMC Northwest for a blood test. The results indicated Nelson was under the influence of amphetamine, methamphetamine, marijuana and buprenorphine.

Nelson is facing misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering the welfare of children and two counts of DUI. She is also facing summary counts of disorderly conduct, careless driving and disregard traffic lane.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled June 20 in Central Court.
