Venango Co. hired local firm to print ballots this year

Venango County has used a local company – PMP Printing in Franklin – to print the ballots that will be used in the county on Nov. 3.

“They (PMP) have exceeded expectations and done a fantastic job,” Sabrina Backer, Venango County’s chief clerk and director of elections, said.

Backer added that printing the ballots locally has also “saved taxpayers a lot of money.”

County commissioner Sam Breene said that when the county was looking at election-related costs, it made sense to to bid out the ballot printing job to local printers as a cost-saving measure.

“We always prefer spending money locally,” Breene said.

Several area printers rejected the job, but PMP jumped at the opportunity, Breene said.

Backer said she has been in close contact with PMP during the entire process, and the company was very quick and thorough in providing the ballots the county needed, including the ones used to make sure the voting machines worked properly, she added.

“I called them about the ballots for testing the voting machines, and 58 minutes later they were delivered to the office,” Backer said.

Testing the machines went more quickly than was expected this year, she said.

Backer said the printing company the county had dealt with in past elections would be sent a flashdrive with the ballots on it and then send back the ballots.

“They would send back the ballots and say “good luck’,” Backer said.

Jeff Hicks, the CEO of PMP Printing, said that while PMP has never printed ballots before, everyday the company prints items such as tickets for sporting events that have data and barcodes on them.

“Data is data,” said Hicks, who added that things have gone smoothly on the company’s end.

He said the printing was “fast paced” to get the ballots delivered in time.
